Summary

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Domestic DIB & MRTFB in DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: The Anniston Army Depot is located in Anniston, Alabama in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain chain halfway between Atlanta, GA and Birmingham, AL just off Interstate 20. The Depot is the largest employer in Calhoun County with approximately 4000 employees.

Duties

Make on-the-spot decisions about steps needed to assure the safe operation of the plant.

Operate, Adjust, and Shutdown a high pressure Boiler to produce the required amount of steam to meet production needs and heating requirements.

Make minor repairs to Boiler equipment in order to maintain an adequate amount of steam pressure to keep up with production needs.

Collect samples, run test, and determine chemical content in water to make necessary adjustment in-order to control corrosion and scale formation in the Distribution System.

Analyze and interpret data in order to make repair or adjustment and determine work requirements.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) BOILER PLANT OPERATOR ~ without more than normal supervision. - I have the ability to perform common duties of Boiler Plant Operator. I can operate a variety of High Pressure and/or Multi-fuel powered Boilers and all related auxiliary equipment. Ability to inspect a variety of High Pressure and/or Multi-fuel powered Boilers, and auxiliary equipment such as; pumps, Water softener, Deaerators, and Dealkalizer. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT This position fully meets the physical effort described at the WG-8 level, which is the same for the WG-10 level as stated in Ref. (a). The work requires moderate to strenuous effort with long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching. The operator frequently lifts and carries boiler parts and chemical supplies weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) unassisted. The duties of operating and maintaining large boiler systems, including performing maintenance and repairs on pumps and other equipment, are consistent with these physical demands. WORKING CONDITIONS This position fully meets the working conditions described at the WG-8 level, which are the same for the WG-10 level as per Ref. (a). Operators work indoors and are subject to high temperatures, constant noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil, and fumes. The work area includes exposure to cuts and abrasions from tools and equipment, and burns from hot water, steam, or contact with boilers. The operator also works on catwalks and ladders. The duties, performed within a power boiler plant environment, directly match these conditions.
